Canine DNA Testing

Ever wonder why your pet religiously chases the mailman, leaps over 5-foot fences or where those huge floppy ears came from? Well, now you just might be able to answer those questions and more!

Breeders have long used DNA testing to verify the parentage of pedigree breeds, but what about the everyday “mutts” many of us own? Pet owners now have two options for canine DNA testing – the Wisdom Panel™ MX and the Canine Heritage™ Breed Test.
Knowing your dogs breed make-up may help identify possible health issues associated with specific breeds, as well as assisting your veterinarian in developing a wellness plan that will provide the most adequate care for your individual pet.

The Wisdom Panel™ MX was developed by research scientists at Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, and uses over 300 DNA markers to assist in identifying breed make-up. This test uses a blood sample obtained by a veterinarian and can identify over 130 AKC-recognized breeds present in a mixed breed dog.

Developed by MetaMorphix Inc., Canine Heritage™, is a simple way for owners to take the guesswork out of what breed(s) contributed to their beloved “mutt”. Canine Heritage™ tests the DNA make-up using a cheek swab obtained by either the owner or veterinarian. The cheek swab is non-invasive and does not involve any further blood work or tests.
